Description
Lapis lazuli is a stone of wisdom and inner truth, long associated with the third eye and throat chakras. It is said to sharpen intuition and support honest speech, especially the harder conversations we tend to put off. Many people reach for it during study, journaling, or meditation, when they want clearer access to their own knowing. Its deep blue, flecked with gold pyrite, has been compared to a night sky for thousands of years.
Scientifically, lapis lazuli is a rock as opposed to a single mineral, composed mainly of lazurite along with calcite, sodalite, and pyrite, with a Mohs hardness of 5–5.5. The mines of Sar-i Sang in Afghanistan have produced it for more than 6,000 years. Egyptians inlaid it in Tutankhamun’s burial mask and ground it into cosmetic powder, and Renaissance painters crushed it into ultramarine pigment, reserving it for the robes of the Virgin Mary because it cost more than gold. Its name joins the Latin lapis, “stone,” with the Persian lāzhward, a word for blue.
