Scientifically, Polychrome Jasper is a variety of chalcedony, composed primarily of silicon dioxide with the formula SiO₂. Its unique multicolored patterns are due to trace minerals and iron inclusions. Polychrome Jasper has a Mohs hardness of 6.5 to 7.
